Co-Development: Web Design Workflow and Knowledge Transfer

South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT)

Challenge:
To co-develop a new Web site in support of the Cooper River Bridge currently being constructed in Charleston, SC. The bridge project has a $500 million budget with ongoing construction through 2006.
Opportunity:
The Cooper River Bridge Web site will be the main communication between the SCDOT and the community during the construction project. The goal of the Web site is to inform the public on traffic, construction progress, and job opportunities.
Solution:
- Partnered with the SCDOT staff to transfer skills on software tools and web development workflow
- Developed reusable templates and addressed interface design issues
Outcome:
- Reduced production time from 12 months to 4 months.
- Sites are now section 508 compliant
- A highly interactive, informative website was created that continues to be a source of information for millions of people across the country. Due to co-development process, in-house team is able to update and modify site without expensive outside contracts.
- Knowledge-transfer and co-development is ongoing as the project progresses.
